Lester, Richard
   b. 1932, Philadelphia (USA)
   Film-maker
   Though born in America, Lester made his name directing quintessentially British 1960s films such as A Hard Day’s Night (1964) and The Knack (1965). Along with the first, his second ‘zany’ Beatles movie, Help (1965), has become the model for pop movies right up to the Spice Girls’ Spiceworld: the Movie in 1997. Always best when working on a small budget, Lester’s early ‘swinging London’ films mixed the style of the Goons (with whom Lester had worked) with the attitudes of 1960s realist films and teenage culture.
